    Jaw Pain from TMJ

Disorders of the temporomandibular joint and muscles are the most frequent causes of jaw pain (TMJ). Infections in the sinuses, blood vessel or nerve disorders, toothaches, and other diseases might be the cause.

Jaw pain typically does not require emergency medical intervention. But it can also be a sign of a more serious underlying problem.

    Common Causes of Jaw Pain

Jaw pain can stem from several different sources, and identifying the underlying cause is key to effective treatment. Common causes include:

    • Teeth grinding or clenching (bruxism): Often stress-related, this puts excessive strain on the jaw joint and surrounding muscles, especially overnight.
    • Poor posture: A forward head position — common among desk-bound office workers — shifts the alignment of the jaw and neck, contributing to TMJ strain over time.
    • Previous injury or trauma: A direct blow to the face or jaw can lead to lasting joint dysfunction.
    • Jaw or bite misalignment: Uneven bite pressure can overload the TMJ on one or both sides.
    • Arthritis: Degenerative joint changes can affect the TMJ just as they do other joints in the body.
    • Chronic stress: Beyond clenching, general muscle tension from stress often radiates into the jaw and surrounding muscles.

How can we help jaw pain from TMJ?

During the appointment, one of our chiropractors will perform a physical examination to determine the nature and severity of your condition. In addition to the physical examination, we'll review your past medical records and access X-ray results, if needed,  to identify the root of the problem. The chiropractor will suggest the best therapy, treatment, and rehabilitation course. Your condition-specific treatment plan may involve one or both:

    Chiropractic Adjustments

An adjustment addresses nerve impingement due to the misalignment of spinal and/or extremity bones. This can happen due to trauma, sports injury, lack of exercise, bad posture, muscle spasm or weakness. For the adjustment hold position, it may take a series of adjustments to allow the connective tissue to recover their required lengths from being stretched too much.

Self-Help Tips for Jaw Pain Relief

While professional treatment addresses the underlying cause, these self-help measures can ease discomfort in the meantime:

    • Apply ice or heat: Ice reduces inflammation during flare-ups; heat helps relax tense muscles between episodes.
    • Eat softer foods temporarily: Avoid hard, chewy, or wide-mouthed foods (like burgers or apples) that strain the jaw.
    • Avoid wide yawning or gum chewing: These movements can aggravate an already strained TMJ.
    • Practice posture correction: Since forward head posture contributes to jaw strain, improving desk ergonomics and posture can help reduce recurring tension.
    • Manage stress and clenching: Being mindful of daytime clenching, and addressing stress through relaxation techniques, can reduce the muscle overload that leads to jaw pain.
